Question

A small purse manufacturer has a single machine that makes the metal parts of a purse. This takes 2 minutes. Another single machine makes the cloth parts in 3 minutes. Then it takes a worker 4 minutes to sew the cloth and metal parts together. Only one worker has the skill to do this. How long will it take to make 6 purses? Answer is 27 minutes, but I don't really see where they get that. I made my pert diagram and got 7 minutes to make a single purse. Then I multiplied that by 6... which would give me 42 minutes. Please show and explain the way to solve this problem. Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

See you did not consider simultaneous occurence of the events hence you got 42 as answer...BUt here what happens is metal parts and cloth parts are built simultaneously ..so after 1st 3minutes the worker starts to sew the cloth and metal parts together which takes 4 minutes. And he keeps on getting a set of metal part and cloth part in every 3 minutes which is less than the time he takes to sew. Hence the worker does no work in first 3 mins and after that he works continuosly to sew 6 cloths. hence the time taken = 3(first 3 mins when the worker is free) + 4*6 (time taken to sew 6 cloth) =3+24=27 minutes.. hope it helps Feel free to ask doubts ..Please rate and reward.. :)
