Staffing Requirements and Full-time Equivalents<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Assume that a home health agency requires 6,000 nursing care hours. If a full-time equivalent (FTE) is paid for 2,080 hours and nonproductive hours are 382 per FTE, how many FTEs will be required to provide the required care hours?

Your answer in numerical terms:

Narrative statement that explains how you calculated your answer:

Assume the agency in the above example operates a total of 250 days a year. How many care hours must it provide per day? Assuming 8-hour shifts and using only registered nurses, how many nurses must be on duty each day?

Your answer in numerical terms:

Narrative statement that explains how you calculated your answer:

Explanation / Answer

1)

WTE, weighted time equivalent = (2080 - 382)/2080 = 0.8163

No of FTE's required = 6000/(2080*0.8163) = 3.53

Statement:

3.53 FTE's will be required since equivalent working hours =2080 -382 = 1698

and number of equivalents required = total workign hours(6000)/Equivalent wroking hours per FTE(1698)

So answer is 3.53

2)

FTE that is paid =2080

care hours =6000

care hours per day = 6000/250 = 24 hours

In 8 hour shift WTE pf each nurse = 8*0.8163 = 6.53

Number of nurses required = 24/6.53 = 3.67 = 4 nurses

Answers are 24 care hours and 4 nurses

Statement:

Total care hours divided by 250 days gives care hours per day.Dividing care hours per day by WTE hours of each gives total numbe rof nurses required. we get 3.67 nurses but we can only provide integer number o fnurses so 4 nurses are required.

So answers are 24 hours and 4 nurses
