Question
The distance between two stations in a 10 Mbps LAN using CSM/CD multiple access method is 2,000 meters. Station A sends a long frame first and three micro seconds later, C starts sending a long frame. Notice that when C begins sending, the signal due to the frame from A has not reached station C yet. If it reached, station C would not send it. How many bits from station A have already been sent when it hears the signal from C? Assume propagation speed of the signal in the medium is 200 million meters per second. ( Please explain good or no points)
Explanation / Answer
Time taken for a bit sent from A to reach C or from C to reach A= distance/speed=2000/(200x106)=10 x10-6 s
i.e 10 micro seconds
C starts transmitting at t=3 mirco seconds.
time taken for bit sent from C to reach A =10 mirco seconds
So the bit from C reaches A at a time t=3+10=13 micro seconds.
In that time, A is transmitting at 10Mbps so no of bits transmitted=bit rate*time=13x10-6x10 x106 bits=130 bits
