Question

If a steel tank has a wall thickness t and operates with its contents under pressure P, then which one of the following statements is true? Explain each answer on whether it is true/not

a] Doubling t (using the same kind of steel) decreases the likelihood that the tank will undergo catastrophic failure at pressure P.

b] Doubling t (using the same kind of steel) does not affect the likelihood that the tank wil undergo catastrophic fialure at pressure P.

c] Replacing the steel tank with one made from an aluminum alloy increases the likelihood that the tank will undergo catastrophic failure at pressure P. (Pretty sure this is true)

d] Work hardening the steel decreases the likelihood that the tank will undergo catastrophic failure at pressure P.

e] Increasing the temperature of the tank's contents increases the likelihood tha the tank will undergo catastrophic failure at pressure P.

Explanation / Answer

a...Doubling t (using the same kind of steel) decreases the likelihood that the tank will undergo catastrophic failure at pressure P. -----> this is true

as catastrophic failure depends on force per unit volume.. ie for infinitesimal volume hence increasing t will decrease likelyhood

.........

b.. false . same explanationa as above

c. false aluminium is less prone to catastrophic failure than steel this is one of the most striking properties of aluminimum

d. false . no work hardening is done here..

e.. false . temperature has nothing to do with catastrophic failure as far as P is kept constant
