Question

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this section you will discuss the results of your experiment(s). This includes all data that you collected or calculated, including ?max, the molar absorptivity (?) of the red dye, and the results of the charcoal and zeolite tests. Interpret the results of your experiment and identify which material (charcoal or zeolites) is better at removing the model PAH from water and try to explain why. Identify any sources of error in your method or results. There are also two topics that you must mention in this section:

1. Discuss at least 3 different parameters that either were or could be used when comparing your zeolites to charcoal. These do not all have to be chemical properties. You do not have to compare the zeolites to charcoal using all three methods, but at least one of them should havebeen tested during the project. Ask yourselves the question, “If I were the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) what would I need to know before I would to want to use this zeolite over charcoal?”

(Most of that is the background of this experiment in which we tried to remove dye from water using activated charcoal, magnetized zeolites and regular zeolites. We measured concentration of dye afer.)

No experimental data is necessary, please only answer the conceptual question.

Please answer question: "If I were the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) what would I need to know before I would to want to use this zeolite over charcoal?”

Explanation / Answer

Allumino Ortho silcates are know as zeolites .It is three dimensional silicates where as charcoal is one of form of carbon. The catalytic reactions that depends on the structure of the catalyst size of the reactants and products molecules is called is called shape selective catalysis.Zeolites are honey comb like structure.Aluminosilicates are microporous with 3D network in which some silicon atoms are replaced by Al-O-Si frame work . Zeolites are used as catalyst in petrochemical industries for cracking of hydrocarbons and isomerisatiion.Important zeolite is ZSM-5 which converts alcohols into gasoline (petrol) by dehydrating them to give a mixture of hydrocarbons.Natural zeolites have been prepared for adsorbed the poisons gases and metal which are forther degradation takes place. This are also used for adsorption of poisons gases which liberated from industries and vehicle to become environment free from its pollution. When compare to charcoal zeolites are adsorbed 99 percentage of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) where as activated charcoal is 90 percentage only.activated charcoal is replaced by zeolites to reduce the pollution.carbon beds under oxidation cause more pollution where as zeolites are degradable polymers for adsorption of poisons gases to become environment is free.
