Question

Respondent's education and father's education a. What is the range and standard deviation of respondent's education? What is the range and standard deviation of fathers level of education? Which sample scored higher in education? Explain your answer. Which is more heterogeneous? Explain your answer. b. c. Respondent's satisfaction with financial situation and satisfaction with job or house work Is our sample more satisfied with their job or financial situation? Explain your answer. Which is more homogeneous? Explain your answer d. Why should one variable have more variability than the other from a societal perspective? e.

Explanation / Answer

(a) As observed from the table, the education is measured in terms of the highest year of school completed, for both father and the respondent. It is clearly seen in the table, that :

For respondent's education : Range = 20, Std. Deviation = 3.127

For Father's education : Range = 20, Std. Deviation = 4.329

(b) From the table, we see MEAN value for respondent's education level is 13.53, which is higher than the mean value for the father's education level 11.63. Hence, we conclude that the sample of Respondents scored higher than the sample of Fathers in education.

(c) Heteroginity can be quantified in terms of the amount of variability in the observed quantity. Here in the table, Std. deviation for Respondent's sample is 3.127 which is lesser than the std.deviation for Fathers' sample which is 4.329. Therefore, Education level in Fathers' group is more heterogeneous than the Respondents group.

(d) Observe in the table that the mean value for the variable "Satisfaction with Financial situation" is 2.02, which is higher than the mean value of the variable "Satisfaction with Job or Housework" 1.66. Therefore, our sample is more satisfied with their Financial Situation.

As defined in part (c), measure for heterogenity(or homogenity) is the Std. Deviation. Std. Deviation for the variable " Satisfaction with Job or Housework" is lesser (1.66) than the std. deviation for the variable " Satisfaction with Financial Situation" (2.02). Therefore, the variable " Satisfaction with Job or Housework" is more homogeneous.
