Explain why you support or oppose greatly increased use of (a) genetically modified food, and (b) organic polyculture.

Explanation / Answer

1. a) Genetically modified food poses health risks as the introduction of antibiotics in such foods may increase the resistance towards antibiotic medication needed for curing diseases. The risks may also be related to the environment as the soil may receive excess toxins through the genetically modified crops. Such toxins tend to inhibit the growth of essential microbial communities that keep soils healthy.

b) Organic polyculture involves effective utilization of a portion of land through the usage of many crops. The crop diversity facilitates the interaction between essential microbes which ensures the safe health of soils. The exposure to diseases is less as multiple crops and reduced usage of pesticides decrease the chances of infestation.

2. National Parks System aims at conservation of natural or partially natural portion of the land developed and protected by the government owning it.

National Wilderness System preserves the wild areas or the forests so that the resources out of such an ecosystem are extracted sustainably. The National Parks System or Service (NPS) is different from this National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS) as the NPS focuses on the development of leisure and knowledge of present and upcoming generations while the NWPS ensures sustainable utilization of wild portions of land for current and future needs.

3. If much of the old-growth forests and tropical rainforests are not protected, the future generations may face threats such as flooding as excessive rainwater may not get absorbed through enough number of trees. Another threat may arise in the form of food shortage as the main supply of energy, i.e. plants, will likely be eliminated from the food chain.

Lastly, the major effect of the failure to protect such forests will be on the climate as the temperatures may rise due to the lack of trees and the eventual build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The air quality may also degrade as the concentration of airborne particulates and harmful gases will likely increase without a sufficient amount of trees. The combined effect of hotter climate and polluted atmosphere may increase the chances of diseases which will negatively impact the future generations.
