Question

For a data set of chest sizes (distance around chest in inches) and weights (pounds) of five anesthetized bears that were measured, the linear correlation coefficient is r=0.979. Use the table available below to find the critical values of r. Based on a comparison of the linear correlation coefficient r and the critical values, what do you conclude about a linear correlation? Explanation / Answer

Here it is given that five anesthelized bear were measured, so n=5

Hence using critical table of given r critical value is 0.878

Now here it is given that r calculated value is 0.979

As we see that calculated r is greater than r critical value we reject the null hypothesis. Which means we have sufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis (i.e. claim)

So answer is

The critical value is 0.878

Since the correlation coefficient is greater than r critical , there is sufficient evidence to support the claim of the linear correlation.
