Question

For a chemistry lab we took a large container of water, sprinkled powder on it and dropped a single drop of .5% oleic acid solution into it. 100 drops of the oleic acid solution filled a container approximately 1 mL. The diameter of the monolayer formed by this oleic acid was approximately 24cm in diameter. I need to find a number of things and I am not sure I am doing it right. Determine the volume of oleic acid in one drop of the solution. Determine the surface area of the monolayer. Determine the thickness of the monolayer in meters and nanometers. I got a volume of 5.00*10^-6 surface area of 4.5238*10^2 and width of 1.10527*10^-10. SO am I doing this right or wrong?

Explanation / Answer

100 drops of the oleic acid solution filled a container approximately 1 mL.

Volume of 1 drop = 10-2 ml

Concentration of oleic acid in solution = 0.5%

Volume of oleic acid in one drop of solution = 0.5% of 10-2 ml = 5.0 x 10-5 ml = 5.0 x 10-5 cm3

Surface area of mono layer = pi r2 = pi x 122 = 4.5239 x 102 cm2

Thickness of monolayer = volume / suface area = 1.105 x 10-7 cm = 1.105 nm
