Page 6 of 6 Problem No. 1.5 10 pes. Given A medical researcher wants At a health fair, he measures them about their exercise habits. He divides the individuals into t whose typical level of exercise is low, and 1. Is this a controlled experiment or an observational study to determine whether exercising can lower blood pressure. the blood pressure of 100 individuals, and interviews wo categories: those those whose level of exercise is high. 2. The subjects in the low exercise group had considerably higher blood pressure, on the average, than subjects in the high exercise group. The researcher concludes that exercise decreases blood pressure. Is this conclusion well-justified? Explain. Solution

Explanation / Answer

1. This is an observational study, because the researcher draws inferences from a sample to a population where the independent variable, here, exercise level, is not under the control of the researcher.

2. This conclusion is not well justified because the researcher has not held the other variables, which are affecting blood pressure, constant: such as (i) diet habits: persons who take more salt are likely to have high blood pressure, (ii) the body condition: fat perple are more likely to have more blood pressure, (iii) type of mind set: those are having lot of tension, will have high blood pressure.
