Question
I can't firgure out how this equation should bewriiten or solved: The climax of anysports season is the playoffs. The magic number is often used topredict a winner, the magic number is the combined number of winsby the first place team and losses by the second place team: Withthat in mind consider the follolwing- The number of wins for thefirst place team (w1) plus the magic Number (m) is one more thanthe sum of the number of wins to date (w2) and the number ofgames (n2) for the second place team. Use the variable definitions to write a equation involving themagic number. Second , solve the equation for the magic number.Write the formula for the magic number. I get as far as (w1+m)+1= w2+n2 and then I just keep confusingmyself anybody got and idea!!! This is a pretty confusing word problem. I think theyare saying the following: M=W1+L2. W1+M=1+W2+N2 . Let us assume that there are no ties. So,N2=W2+L2. So we can re-write the second equation as follows: W1+M=1+W2+W2+L2=1+2W2+L2. From the first equation get W1=M-L2, so using that weget: M-L2+M=1+2W2+L2. 2M=2+2W2+2L2 M=1+W2+L2 So, W1=1+W2. . I really have no idea what they are tring to figure outhere. The best I get is that the first place team hasone more win than the second place team... but that's not a formulafor the magic number. I highlighted two differentpossible formulas, and that's how I got the numbers about thewins. What do you think? SORRY!Related Questions
