this is a rate * time = distance problem...know the distancedis 60 but we know the distances are the same in both We also know that the time can be expressed as t in the slowtrain and t - 2 for the fast train we know the rate of the fast train, 2r, can be expressedin terms of the slow train, r. slow train..... r * t = 60 or t = 60/r fast train 2r* (t-2) =60 by substitution, 2r *(60/r - 2)=60 simplify theleft side to get: 120 - 4r =60 subtract 120 from both sides -4r=-60 divideby -4 r =15 mph this is the rate of the slow train 2r = 30mph this is the rate ofthe fast train Note: dont be surprised to see a problem like this wherethey ask for the time each train arrived. It's the questionthat requires another question to be answered first....very commonin word problems. In any case, always check to see that you clearly answer thequestion asked and that the units are clearly labeled.
