Question
I need help setting up an equation for a mixture problem. The question is: A Cupronickel alloy that is 60% copper and 40% nickel is needed to manufacturea marine propeller. Only two cupronickel alloys are available, one is 75% copper
and 25% nickel and the other is 55% copper and 45% nickel. How many pounds
of each of these alloys need to be melted and combined to obtain 300 pounds of
the 60% copper/ 40% nickel alloy? (Hint: The Cupronickel alloys contain only
copper and nickel.) All I would like help with is hints on how to set up the equation and then I think I can work it out myself. Thanks!
Explanation / Answer
Hints: say you use x pounds of A and y pounds of B. Then you have 3x copper + x nickel + 11y copper + 9 y nickel. Group similar terms. (3x + 11y) copper + (x + 9y) nickel 60% of 300 lb is C. Find C. 40% of 300 lb is N. Find N. 3x + 11y = C x + 9y = N Solve the system of equations.
