Question
A highway has a speed limit of 55 miles per hour (mph). The highway is labeled by mile markers, positive integers which increase by 1, spaced 1 mile apart from each other. At 2:00 PM. a highway patrol officer detects a car traveling at 44 mph at mile marker #7. Then at 2:15 PM. another highway patrol officer detects the same car traveling at 17 mph at mile marker #23. The two highway patrol officers share this information with each other via radio and come to the conclusion that the car must have been traveling over the speed limit between 2:00 PM and 2:15 PM and give the driver a ticket. Explain how they can prove in court that the car was speeding.Explanation / Answer
At 2 PM the car was doing 44 mph at Point #7.
At 2:15 PM another officer spots the car at Point#23 at 47 mph.
The speed limit is 55 mph.
The distance between the markers = 23-7 = 16 miles.
The elapsed time is 15 minutes.
So the average speed of car between the markers = 16*4 mph = 64 mph.
64 mph is greater than the speed limit of 55 mph - OVERSPEEDING.
This is the argument to be used in Court !
