Correct answers to the graded problems must be supported by correct work to receive credit Practice problems to be handed in: Section 2.5: 11, 17,31,37,40, 45, 53 Section 2.4 65 1 (1 pt.) Find the point of intersection of the following pair of straight lines, using ether eina-by substitution or elimination by addition. -36 3x-2y+30 Answer: and a scrap value of $100,000. 2. (1 pt) A new building that costs $1,100,000has a useful life of 50 years a. Using straight-line depreciation, find the linear function that gives the book value V of the building ( dollars) at the end of t years (0stss0). Answer b. Find the building's book value at the end of 30 years Answer

Explanation / Answer

1. y - (3/4)x = 6

=> (-3/4)x + y = 6

Multiplying by -4

=> 3x - 4y = -24 (1)

3x - 2y = -3 (2)

Subtracting (2) from (1)

=> - 2y = -21

=> y = 21/2

Substituting in (1)

=> 3x - 4*21/2 = -24

=> 3x - 42 = -24

=> 3x = -24 + 42

=> 3x = 18

=> x = 6

The point of intersection is (6,21/2)

2. a. Straight line depreciation = ($1,100,000 - $100,000) / 50

= $1,000,000 / 50

= $20,000

Linear function for V = 100000 + 20000t

b. At t = 30

V = 100000 + 20000*30

= 100000 + 600000

= $700000
