Question

can you help me solve this problem? thx

Let p be the chance of having a trait in a population and q the chance you do not have it. Let a be the accuracy of a test and e the error rate of that same test. p + q = a + e = 1. Chance of a false negative = eq ep Chance of a false positive - eq+ap +aq e2 Double test for false positive = Find the requested odds rounded to four significant digits when the accuracy is 99.5% and the trait shows up in 0.2% of the population. (3 points) Chance of a false negative = Chance of a false positive Double test for false positive =

Explanation / Answer

Hi,
Given accuracy i s99.5%, i.e e=0.05 a=0.95
also trait shows up in 0.2% i.e p=0.2 and q=0.8
chance of false positive= 0.05*0.8 /(0.05*0.8 + 0.95*0.2) =0.1739

chance of false negative=0.05*0.2/(0.05*0.8 + 0.95*0.2) =0.04348
double test for false positive= 0.05*0.05*0.8 /(0.05*0.05*0.8 + 0.95*0.95*0.2)=0.01095
