Research Methods Exam 1 1. Generally speaking, in which type of research method can a researcher isolate a "cause and "effect" relationship between the variables? 2. What kind of variable is under the control and manipulated by the researcher? is an experiment in which neither the people being studied nor the 3. The individuals running the study know who is in the control group and who is in the experimental group until after the results are tallied 4. Reliability refers to the 5. Emma Wemer and Ruth Smith employed which research approach in conducting their study on resiliency? 6. In creating a research study, each variable must have in order to measure it empirical is a study in which individuals are followed and periodically reassessed over a 7. A period of time. 8. Unbiased sampling permits 9. Which measuring scale has the magnitude property of an absolute zero? has to do with the accuracy of an instrument. 10 11, A is when the individuals choose themselves to be in a study. 12. After the title page an ASA research paper begins with the which is a summary of the entire research paper. 13. Aninductive hypothesis is asking, 14. A deductive hypothesis 15. The principal of noninterference and it descriptive purposes are used in 6. A highly controlled laboratory experiment is known as 17. Which section of an ASA research paper describes how the participants were selected for the study?Explanation / Answer
1.Causal research : It is an investigation into cause and effect relationship between two variables .We observe the variation caused by one variable on another variable and measure the amount of variation. But practically speaking no researcher can actually know the total no : of factors affecting a process . So researcher have to differentiate between
known causes of variation and unknown causes of variation . This type of research is very complex . There are two types of causal research
1.Experimentation Research : Experiment conducted in a laboratory with all known factors tightly controlled. This type is very expensive
2.Statistical Research : Analysis based on historical data especially using regression techniques . This type is most common and very cheap .
2.Independent Variable is the one which is controlled and manipulated by researcher . This often produces dependent variables and amount of effect caused in dependent variable is measured . For example in a potato chips manufacturing company they may change spice content and measure amount of change in taste , acidity levels etc .
3.Double blind study is the experiment in which neither people being studied nor people running study know who is in control group until test result are out. It is mainly used to eliminate the effect of bias , placebo etc. This type of study gives us higher accuracy than other kinds of study .
4.Reliability means quality over time . It is a measure of consistency . It is a comparative measure .For example out of 10 cars , we can say the one which performs as guaranteed by manufacturer over maximum time is more reliable than others.
