Question
6. What measurement method was used to measure the bone mineral density (BMD) for the study participants? Discuss the quality of this measurement method and document your response.
9. Oh et al. (2014 , p. 296) stated that “the adherence rate to the TLM program was 99.6%.” Discuss the importance of intervention adherence, and document your response.
Introduction Oh and colleagues (2014) conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to examine the effects of a therapeutic lifestyle modification TLM) intervention on the knowledge, self- efficacy, and behaviors related to bone health in postmenopausal women in a rural com munity. The study was conducted using a pretest-posttest control group design with a sample of 41 women randomly assigned to either the intervention (n 321) or control group (m 20). "The intervention group completed a 12-week, 24-session TLM program of individualized health monitoring, group health education, exercise, and calcium vitamin D supplementation. Compared with the control group, the intervention group showed significant increases in knowledge and self-efficacy and improvement in diet and exercise after 12 weeks, providing evidence that a comprehensive TLM program can be effective in improving health behaviors to maintain bone health in women at high risk of osteoporosis" (Oh et al., 2014, p. 292)Explanation / Answer
6. What measurement method was used to measure the bone mineral density (BMD) for the study participants? Discuss the quality of this measurement method and document your response.
Bone minearl density was measured using the DXA. And the BMD was classfied into thrree categories
1. Osteoporosis (a BMD T-score less than -2.5)
2. Osteopenia (a BMD T-score between -2.5 and -1.0)
3. Normal bone density (a BMD T-score higher than -1.0)
It is also given in the table footnote of b that the Bone status is defined from T-score of femur neck site based on World Health Organization criteria. Hence, the classification is WHO standard whcih is considered to be high quality.
9. Oh et al. (2014 , p. 296) stated that “the adherence rate to the TLM program was 99.6%.” Discuss the importance of intervention adherence, and document your response.
Adherence rate to the program was 99.6% that is 99.6% of subjects had undertalken the alloted treatments. Power of the study depends on the adherence rate. If the adherence rate is decreased the study power will be reduced and as a result, the study will be useless even if there is a highly significant results.
