Question

You need to complete an independent t-test analysis on the variables of your choosing. Remember, the grouping variable must be something that breaks the sample into at least two nominal categories (e.g. gender). The variable you are analyzing must be a variable where the number has a real value (e.g. Likert scale or open ended). This information will be used to start the next section of your paper. An example (which cannot be used) would be use gender as the grouping variable and age as the test variable to see if there is a statistical difference between men and women on the variable of age. Submit your SPSS Output saved to a .rtf or word document.

I am choosing gender and class. For gender, there are 77 males and 138 females. For class, there are 72 freshmen, 61 sophomores, 50 juniors, and 31 seniors.

Explanation / Answer

Am afraid, gender and class cannot be used to conduct an independent t test since both of them are nominal categories. Freshmen, sophomores, junior and seniors are all categories like males and female.

You would need to use continous variables with real values for each student. For example subject scores, weight, height etc.

For norminal categories, either gender or class may be used, but not both

If gender and subject scores are chosen, information in the following format will be needed.

Male 1-Score

Male 2-Score

Female 1-Score

Female 2-Score
