Question

A 577-bed general hospital had 15,846 patients discharged/died in 2005.  Total deaths for the year were 497.  There were 91 cases reported to the Coroner, and 361 autopsies were performed.

Total patient days were 136,995 and the total length of stay of discharged/died patients was 136,540.

Give the formulae, and using the above information compute the following:

1.    Hospital death rate

2.    Bed turnover rate

3.    Net autopsy rate

4.    Average length of stay

(Section B)

The following data have been collected from a 600 bed general hospital during 2008:

Patients admitted                                                                      19,937

Total discharges/deaths                                                           19,833

Patients remaining in hospital midnight

Dec.31, 2007                                                                  622

Patients remaining in hospital midnight

Dec.31, 2008                                                                 646

Total length of stay of discharged/died patients                  218,505

Total patient days                                                                    236,832

Total deaths                                                                              605

Total autopsies performed                                                      475

Coroner's cases (unautopsied)                                               33

Number of anaesthetics administered                                    6,915

Number of operations performed                                            7,600

Total registered outpatients                                                     192,746

From the information above, calculate the following:

a.        Average daily census

b.        Hospital death rate

c.         Gross autopsy rate

d.        Net autopsy rate

e.        Percent of occupancy

Explanation / Answer

1.Hospital death rate

Number of inpatient deaths in a period X 100/number of dischargers in the same period = 497X100/15,846= 3.14%

2.Bed turnover rate

Number of discharge for a period/ average bed count during a period = 15,846/577=27.5

3.Net autopsy rate

Total number of autopies on inpatient deaths for a period X 100/ Total inpatient deaths = 361 X 100/136-91=

4.Average length of stay

Discharge days/ totals discharges= 136,995 / 136,540= 1.00

From the information above, calculate the following:

a.Average daily census

Total service days for the unit for the period/ total number of days in the period= 236,832 / 365 = 670

b.Hospital death rate

Number of deaths of inpatients in a period X 100/ Number of discharges= 605X 100/ 19,833= 3.05%

c.Gross autopsy rate

Total inpatient autopsies for given period X 100 / total inpatient deaths for the period = 475 X 100/ 605 = 78.51%

d.Net autopsy rate

Total inpatients for a given period X 100/ total inpatient deaths= 19937 X 100/ 605-33= 3485

e.Percent of occupancy

Total service days for a period X 100/ total bed count days in the period= 365 X 100/ 577=63.25
