Question
Talk to the Animals In an American Animal Hospital Association survey, 37% of respondents stated that they talk to their pets on the telephone. A veterinarian thought this result unusually high, so he randomly selected 150 pet owners and discovered that 49 of them spoke to pets on the phone. Does the veterinarian have the right to be at level alpha = 0.1? Write the null and alternative hypotheses, using proper notation. Determine the appropriate critical value, and sketch the rejection region on the axes below. Calculate the test statistic, and label this value in your sketch. State both your statistical and proper conclusions. Calculate the P-value of the test.Explanation / Answer
1.
Null Ho : p = .37
Alternate Ha: p!=.37
2.
The critical value is with alpha = .1, which is +/- 1.645
3. The test static can be calcualted by:
p = 49/150 = .32667
Z = (.32667-.37)/sqrt(.32667*.6733/150) =-1.1316
4. Statistical conclusion: Since our Z value is outside the rejection region
or it is between +/- 1.645 limits of rejection, we aren't rejecting /fail to
reject null hypothesis
Proper conclusion: We say that p = .37
5. P-value is .1292( we get this from Z tables)
