Question

A study was conducted to find out if a new exercise program was more effective than an old one at improving cardiovascular fitness. Subjects were randomly selected to participate and then randomly assigned to one of the two programs. After six months of exercising, they were given a score based on their fitness performance. Scores ranged from 19 to 73, with higher scores indicating higher performance. Which of the following hypothesis tests would be best for this study?

A) Paired data test

B) Independent sample test

C) ANOVA

D) Test of two proportions

E) Chi-squared test of independence

F) Hypothesis test for regression

Explanation / Answer

Study was conducted to find out if a new exercise program was more effective than an old one at improving cardiovascular fitness. Subjects were randomly selected to participate and then randomly assigned to one of the two programs. After six months of exercising, they were given a score based on their fitness performance. Scores ranged from 19 to 73, with higher scores indicating higher performance.

Which of the following hypothesis tests would be best for this study?

(A) Paired Data test - datas are not paired as they are randomly selected and distributed so this is not the best way.

(B) Independent Sample Test : The independent sample t-test compares two means. It assumes a model where the variables in the analysis are split into independent and dependent variables. The model assumes that a difference in the mean score of the dependent variable is found because of the influence of the independent variable. Thus, the independent sample t-test is an analysis of dependence. It is the t-test to use when two separate independent and identically distributed variables are measured.

So, Independent sample test is the best way to study that reandom sampling method.

(C) ANOVA: The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to determine whether there are any statistically significant differences between the means of three or more independent (unrelated) groups. It is method to tests the significance of group differences between two or more groups. which is not applicable. It can be used but not as to check the given hypothesis.

(D) Test of two proportions : there are no proportions involved so not necessary.

(E) Chi-squared test of independence : compares observed frequencies to expected frequencies. Here not the case of frequencies so not practical to use.

(F) Hypothesis test for regression : There are no explanatory and reponse variable included so not of much practical use here.
