Question
Answer both of the following questions. Attached you will find a regression analysis (along with frequencies for the variables used in the analysis) testing the hypothesis that Republicans will like Obama less than Democrats and that those with a higher level of education will like him more than those with a lower level of education. (Obama therm is a "feeling thermometer Low scores indicate one is cold. does not like him, and high scores indicate one is warm, likes him.) From this analysis, answer the following, (25 points) a) Does the analysis support the hypotheses as stated? How do you know? b) Using the t-score, significance level (a/2 .05), and confidence interval methods determine whether the independent variables are statistically significant. Explain how you determined this. c) Interpret the unstandardized regression equation, intercept and slopes. d) Interpret the standardized regression coefficients (Betas) and the R-square statistic. e) Predict the liking of Obama for the following: 1) a weak Democrat with 8 years of education 2) an Independent with 12 years of education 3) a strong Republican with 16 years of education. 2) Attached you will find part of the results page from your outside reading "The Influence of Political Consultants in the 1992 Congressional Elections." From this, please answer the following. (20 points) a) Tell me what the authors' hypothesis is. b) Identify which is the dependent variable, the independent test, and the independent control variables. termine this? c Are the independent test variables statistically How did you d) Interpret the unstandardized coefficients for the test variables.Explanation / Answer
1)
(a) The coefficient of partyid is negative (-8.595). The value of partyid is greater for republicans than democrats.
So, the dependent variable obama_therm will be lower for republicans (product of negative coefficient and large value of partyid for republicans)
And the dependent variable obama_therm will be higher for democrats (product of negative coefficient and lower value of partyid for democrats)
The coefficient of educ_r is positive (0.265). So the dependent variable obama_therm will increase with the higher level of education.
So, the analysis support the hypothesis as stated.
(b) The significance of partyid (0.000) is less than the significance level of 0.05, so partyid is a statistically significant independent variable.
The significance of educ_r (0.173) is greater than the significance level of 0.05, so educ_r is not a statistically significant independent variable.
(c) With increase of 1 unit in partyid7, there would be decrease of 8.595 unit in obama_therm
With increase of 1 unit in educ_r, there would be increase of 0.265 unit in obama_therm
If the partyid7 and educ_r is 0, obama_therm is 77.599
(d) With increase of 1 unit in standard deviation of partyid7, there would be decrease of 0.619 unit in standard deviation of obama_therm
With increase of 1 unit in standard deviation of educ_r, there would be increase of 0.023 unit in standard deviation of obama_therm
R-squared = 0.381, so 38.1% of variation in obama_therm is explained ny the regression model.
(e) The regression equation is obama_therm = 77.599 - 8.595*partyid7 + 0.265*educ_r
1) partyid = 1 for weak democrat
obama_therm = 77.599 - 8.595*1 + 0.265* 8 = 71.124
2) partyid = 3 for Independent
obama_therm = 77.599 - 8.595*3 + 0.265* 12 = 54.994
3) partyid = 6 for Independent
obama_therm = 77.599 - 8.595*6 + 0.265* 16 = 30.269
