Question
A clinical psychologist interested in alcohol abuse and rural sociologist team up to conduct a field study of alcohol consumption in country-and-western bars. They are both interested in whether music tempo in these establishments increases drinking rate. More specifically, they suspect that the type of lyrics (“tear jerker” vs. “other”) may be related to tempo in the determination of consumption rate. In the bar being studied, each researcher selects four persons at random to observe during the playing of different country songs. A tape recorder is used unobtrusively to record songs and data. At 30-second intervals during each song, observations are taken. At the time of the observation, each of the investigators taps his table if the targets have sipped a drink during the observation interval. The data were tabulated over 45 minutes, and music tempos were divided into three beats-per-minute (bpm) ranges. In relation to the lyrics and tempo, the sip frequencies were as follows:
Slow
Moderate
Fast
Other
18
34

Tear Jerker

Explanation / Answer
here null hypothesis: Ho: tempo and lyrics are independent to drinking rate
alternate hypothesis:Ha: tempo and lyrics are dependent to drinking rate
at 0.01 level of significance and 2 degree of freedom crtiical value of chi square =9.2103
applying chi square test of independence on above:
as chi stat 14.605 is higher then critical value we can reject null hypothesis.
We have sufficient evidence at 0.01 level of significance that tempo and lyrics related to drinking rate
