1-What causes the common cold?
2-Why do cells allow the virus to enter the body?
3-When one virus enters the body, how many end up being released?
4-What types of cells in the body are susceptible to attack?
5-What causes our cold symptoms?
6-What are characteristics of viruses that allow you to classify them as nonliving? What other characteristics might allow you to classify them as living?
7-Your thoughts: Why do you believe science can not cure the common cold?
Explanation / Answer
1.
A virus causes the common cold (rhinovirus).
2.
When the viral cell surface ligands fit into our cell surface receptor like a key fits into a lock, the virus enters the body.
3.
When 1 virus enters a body, almost 1,000,000,000,000,000 viruses released out of body.
4.
The cells that are unable to destroy the viruses and low in immune properties are susceptible attack by viruses.
5.
When someone with cold sneezes then millions of droplets containing viruses spread in the air and if these inhaled by a healthy person, the virus enters into the body replicates producing numerous cells and spreads along the air passages causing obstructuin in breathing and results in symptoms like running nose, inconvinience in brathing etc.
6.
The viruses are considered as nonliving because they desperately need a cell for their nourishment and proliferation. They are considred as living because they replicate and carryout the synthesis of DNA and proteins by using the host cellular machinery.
7.
Science cannot cure common cold because of the intelligence of viruses as they change shapes and antigens by genetic shift and genetic drift. Their antigens are not standard and it would be difficult to design a drug for these kind of antigens as they are unpredictable in structure and genetics.
