Question

Suppose you contact a hypothesis test about a population mean when the standard deviation is known (a'z test') by calculating z statistic and determine whether to reject the null hypothesis. Assume that your z statistic is a positive value and that you will reject the null hypothesis when z is very large. Listed below are possible changes to the study design or to the results of the study. determine whether the likelihood of rejecting the null hypothesis increases, decreases or stays the same for each of these changes. Use the dropdown menus in the right hand column to indicate your choice.

Explanation / Answer

a) if we shift from one tailed test to two tailed test then Critical value of z will increase and likelihood of rejecting the null will decrease

b) If population variance will decrease then the standard error of mean will decrease and hence the test statistic will increase and hence the likelihood of rejecting the null will increase

c) An increase in the significance value will decrease the critical value and hence the likelihood of rejecting the null will increase

d) An decrease in the sample size will increase the standard error of mean and hence the test statistic will decrease and hence the likelihood of rejecting the null will also decrease
