Question

A computer program designer has developed an online questionnaire that she believes will take a mean of 15 minutes to complete. Suppose that she samples 35 volunteers and finds that the mean time to complete the questionnaire is 14 minutes with a standard deviation of 2.5 minutes. Determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean completion time for the questionnaire differs from its intended duration. At the 0.05 level of significance, perform an appropriate hypothesis test and state your conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

Null hypothesis Ho:=15

Alterative hypothesis Ha: :15

Test Statistics: t=(xbar-15)/(s/sqrt(n))

=(14-15)/(2.5/sqrt(35))

=-2.3664

degree of freedom=n-1=35-1=34

Two tailed Critical t at 0.05 level is t=±2.0322

As calculated |t|>2.0322, we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the mean completion tie for the questionnaire differs from 15 minutes
