Question
Suppose you surveyed 30 people and asked them whether they are white (W) or nonwhite (N), and how many traumas (serious accidents, rapes, or crimes) they have experienced in the past year. You also asked them to tell you whether they perceive themselves as being in the upper, middle, working, or lower class. Your survey resulted in the raw data presented in the table below: a. Identify the level of measurement for each variable. b. Construct raw frequency tables for race. c. What proportion of the 30 individuals is nonwhite? What percentage is white?Explanation / Answer
a. The variable race is classified into categories-whites (W) and non-whites (N). The numbers in each category can be counted and sizes of categories are compared. Therefore, race is measured at nominal level. Similarly, class is categorized into L (lower), M (middle), U (Upper) and W (working) and the only mathematical operations that can be performed on them are counting numbers in each category and comparing sizes of categories. Therefore, class is also measured at nominal level of measurement. The variable trauma is categorized (serious accidents, rape or crimes) as well as ordered, the distance between attributes have meaning (that is 0-1 is of sam edistance as 1-2), and there exists absolute zero. Thus, trauma is measured at ratio level of measurement. Apart from counting numbers in each categories, and judgement related to greater than and less than mathematical operations can be performed on the variable.
b. The frequency table is as follows:
c. There are 13 non whites, therefore, the proportion of non-whites is as follows:
13/30=0.4333
There are 17 whites, therefore, percentage of whites is as follows:
17/30*100=56.67%
