Question

8.4Sampling on Campus. You see a student standing in front of the student center, now and then stopping other students to ask them questions. She says that she is collecting student opinions for a class assignment. Explain why this sampling method is almost certainly biased. Please explain in detail.

8.34 Nonresponse. Academic sample surveys, unlike commercial polls, often discuss nonresponse. A survey of drivers began by randomly sampling all listed residential telephone numbers in the United States. Of 45,956 calls to these numbers, 5029 were completed.23 What was the rate of nonresponse for this sample? (Only one call was made to each number. Nonresponse would be lower if more calls were made.) Please explain in detail how you got the answer and show work.

Explanation / Answer

8.4:

Since student who is doing survey did not take the random sample so sample may not represent the population correctly. It is likely that all student did not come to study center. And it is also possible that resecher was not in front of study center all time. So it is very much likley sample is biased.

8.34:

Out of 45956 calls, 5029 were completed. So the number of call were not completed is 45956 - 5029 = 40927. SO non response rate is

40927 / 45956 = 0.8906
