An np chart is to be used following an operation on an assembly line. A roving inspector takes a sample of 100 pie ces every hour and checks for nonconforming pieces. The inspector posts the results to the chart and has au- ority to shut down the line if a sample is out of control. th The chart is based on a standard value of Po = 0.04. (a) What are the centerline and control limits for the np chart? (b) If the true process average fraction nonconforming is 0.12, what is the probability the inspector will shut down the line following his next inspection?

centerline for the np chart =np =100*0.04 =4

and control limits =np -/+ 3*(np(!-p))1/2  = 4 -/+ 3*1.96 = -1.88 ; 9.88 ~ ( 0 ; 9.88) (as lower limit can not be less then 0)

therefore lower control limit =0

upper control limit =9.8

b) for p=0.12

mean =np=100*0.12=12

and std deviation =(np(1-p))1/2 =3.2496

therefore probability to shut down the line =P(X>=10) =P(Z>(9.5-12)/3.2496)=P(Z>-0.7693)=0.7791
