Question

Consider now the following symmetric double-barrier structures with: (1) barrier height = 0.3 eV, barrier width = well width = 4 nm: (2) barrier height = 0.2 eV, barrier width = well width = 4 nm: (3) barrier height = 0.4 eV, barrier width = well width = 4 nm. Answer the following questions: How many quasi-bound states are in the well? Discuss the sharpness of the resonance as a function of the barrier height. Comment on the energy of the quasi-bound state variation with the variation of the barrier height.

Explanation / Answer

Only one quasi bound state is present in all the three cases

More the height of the barrier sharpness of the resonant state increases as it resembles real bound state. Broader will be the resonance peak if the barrier height is less

The energy of the quasi bound state increases with the increase in height of the barrier , as the height increases , the problem becomes like that of infinite potential well
