As mentioned in the hint, Carrier confinement & Photon confinement are two ways of acheiving optical confinement in diode laser.Carrier Confinement is used to achieve high level radiative recombination in the active region.Photon confinement deals with preventing absorption of emitted radiation by material surrounding the pn junction.To achieve these confinements the most effective device is double hetrostructure device which is Double hetrojunction Laser . it is made by narrowing the injected current to a thin stripe of active material. This increased density over a small area will allow for further reducing of the current . This also helps in continuous wave operation at even room temperature. In an Double Hetrostructure , the active region is sandwiched between a p- and n-type AlGaAs
