Question
To better understand customer satisfaction with the service in the store a local clothing store decides to conduct a survey. An employee of the store is asked to approach the first ten customers as they enter the store on three randomly selected Mondays in April, May, and June.
The employee asks each customer, "How satisfied are you with the customer service in this store on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being not satisfied and 5 being very satisfied?"
Identify the population of interest and the sample obtained. What might be wrong with the sampling method chosen for this study? How would you suggest they do this differently?
Explanation / Answer
Population of interest: Customer satisfactin index
Sample; first 10 customers entering the store ion 3 randomly selected Mondays in April May and June.
Mistakes in the present survey and suggestions for solving them:
(i) Monday, being a working day, most of the employed persons may not be included in the same. So, it can be Sunday, when all can contribute.
(ii) First 10 customers will exclude those who go for shopping only in the evenings. So, it can be split into 3 periods: one in the morning, one in the noon and one in the evening. (iii) Instead of 3 months together, it can by January, May and September.
