Question

Complete the following problems to turn in. Read carefully and show all of your work. F3: Hydroelectric generators at Hoover Dam produce a kilo Volts. Electric power is produced from the gravitational potential energy of water that falls 160 meters. If we assume 100% efficiency in the conversion of gravitational energy to electric energy: (a) How much electric power does the dam produce? (b) How much mass of water needs to fall every second to produce this power? maximum current of 8.00 kiloAmps at 250

Explanation / Answer

A) Electric power dam produces = voltage × current

P=VI=250×1000V×8×1000 Amp=2×109 watt=2GW

B) potential energy =mgh

Potential energy in every second is equivalent to power

So Power= mgh every second

2×109 = m×9.8×160

m= 2×109 ÷ (9.8×160)

m= 1.27×106 kg
