Question
A catering company provides coffees for two companies: A and B. Company A has 125 employees and Company B has 200 employees. The catering company has determined that the mean number of cups of coffee consumed in a day by all the employees in Company A is 2.0 with a standard deviation of 0.6, is 1.8 with a standard deviation of 4 for Company B.
(a) What is the probability that the employees in Company A consume more than 250 cups per day?
(b) What is the probability that the employees in Company B consume more than 250 cups per day?
(c) What is the probability that the employees from Company A drink more coffees than Company B on average?
Explanation / Answer
A) mean no of cups consume by company A = 250/125 = 2
P(X > 2 = P((X - mean)/SD > (2 - 2)/0.6
= P(Z > 0)
= 1 - P(Z < 0)
= 1 - 0.5000 = 0.5
B) mean no of cups consume by company B= 250/200 = 1.25
P(Z > 1.25) = P((x - mean)/SD > (1.25 - 1.8)/4)
= P(Z > -0.14)
= 1 - P(Z < -0.14)
= 1 - 0.4443 = 0.5557
