Question

You do not need to solve these. For questions 1 to 5 please just identify which statistical test should be used: Chi-square goodness of fit test, chi-square test for independence, one sample t-test, pearson correlation, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, or paired samples t-test. (Below is a chart in case this helps).

Madfer Bacon has decided to quit the Kwookie business and open a restaurant. Recently, you have been hired by Mr. Bacon who believes that there is opportunity to open an upscale restaurant specializing in kale and quinoa delicacies (called “Quale”). This restaurant will be located somewhere in the city. The restaurant was conceived as the following:

A restaurant with elegant décor, offering personal service in a spacious, semi-private environment, featuring menu items prepared by a Culinary Institute of America trained chef. The atmosphere, food, and service at Quale meet a standard equal to that of the finest restaurants in the world.

Mr. Bacon’s team has designed an online questionnaire (see questionnaire and codebook attached) and gathered a representative random sample of individuals from the NYC area. Using the data provided, Mr. Bacon would like to know the following:

1. Mr. Bacon believes that the population average for the dollar amount spent per month eating out at restaurants is greater than $120. State the null and alternative hypotheses.

Test this hypothesis. Assuming we chose = .05, state whether or not we can reject the null hypothesis and what you conclude (Using SPSS)

2. Mr. Bacon wonders if the average likelihood of patronizing Quale is equivalent between males and females. State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis, interpret it, and answer Mr. Bacon’s question. (Using SPSS)

3. With respect to the location of Quale, do people prefer a waterfront view or a drive less than 30 minutes? State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis, interpret it, and state your conclusion. (Using SPSS)

4. Mr. Bacon would like to advertise in different media outlets. He wonders if he will be reaching the same or different potential customers if he advertises on both the local TV news and in City Magazine. Is there a relationship between watching local TV news and subscribing to City Magazine? State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis, interpret it, and state your conclusion. (Using SPSS)

5. Is there a relationship between age and preference for unusual deserts? State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis and interpret it. Based upon this analysis, do younger or older people prefer unusual desserts more? (Using SPSS)

Explanation / Answer

1. Mr. Bacon believes that the population average for the dollar amount spent per month eating out at restaurants is greater than $120. State the null and alternative hypotheses.

This is a case of independent 1 sample t test , as we want to compare the average values against $120

2. Mr. Bacon wonders if the average likelihood of patronizing Quale is equivalent between males and females. State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis, interpret it, and answer Mr. Bacon’s question. (Using SPSS)

There are 2 groups males and females that are independent samples and we want to check the average likelihood of patronizing Quale. Hence we can perform a 2 sample indepent t test here for the difference in means

3. With respect to the location of Quale, do people prefer a waterfront view or a drive less than 30 minutes? State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis, interpret it, and state your conclusion. (Using SPSS)

Here the preference is asked , so we will havepreferences for waterfront and drive less than 30 mins. Hnece a independent 2sample t test can be used , we have 2 groups here

To check the relationshop between the 2 variables local tv news and city magazines for the counts of same or different potential customers , we shall perform a chi-square test for independence

5. Is there a relationship between age and preference for unusual deserts? State the null and alternative hypotheses. Perform the proper analysis and interpret it. Based upon this analysis, do younger or older people prefer unusual desserts more? (Using SPSS)

age and preference are both numeric variables hence to test the relationship , we must check for chi square goodness of fit statistics
