Worksheet 39: t TEST: INTERPRETATION
RIDDLE: One son went to sea. The other became Vice President of the U.S. What happened to both of them?
Directions: To find the answer to the riddle, write "T" for "true" or "F" for "false" on the line to the left of each statement. The word at the end of the first true statement is the first word in the answer to the riddle, the word at the end of the second true statement is the second word, and so on. The following questions are based on this information:
Two random samples were independently drawn to form experimental and control groups. The dependent variable was measured and the value of t for the difference between the means was computed to be 2.536. There were 10 subjects in one group and 9 in the other. The investigator wishes to use a two-tailed test.
_____ 1. The difference between the means is significant at the 0.5 level. (NEITHER)
_____ 2. The difference between the means is significant at the .01 level. (BOTH)
_____ 3. The null hypothesis may be rejected at the .05 level. (HAS)
_____ 4. The null hypothesis may be rejected at the .01 level. (OF)
_____ 5. The .05 level represents a higher level of significance than the .01 level represents. (THE)
_____ 6. At the .05 level, one may be certain that the experimental treatment is effective. (SONS)
_____ 7. Odds are greater than 1 in 100 that random errors account for the difference. (BEEN)
_____ 8. At the .01 level, one can be certain that the null hypothesis is correct. (WENT)
_____ 9. Odds are 5 or less in 100 that random errors account for the difference. (HEARD)
_____ 10. Odds are 5 or more in 100 that random errors account for the difference. (SAILED)
_____ 11. Even at the .05 level, it is possible that random sampling errors created the difference. (FROM)
_____ 12. The investigator should select the significance level he or she will use before analysis of the data. (SINCE)
_____ 13. The t test would have been just as valid or meaningful from this study if the samples had been drawn in a biased manner, yielding superior subjects in the experimental group. (AWAY)
Write the answer to the riddle here, putting one word on each line:
_________ _________ _________ _________ _________
_________
Explanation / Answer
Given Values , t Calculated= 2.536 n1= 10 , n2= 9
d.f=n1+n2-2= 10+9-2= 17
Critical value of t at alpha= 0.05 with 17 d.f is 2.11
Since critical value of is smaller than Calculated t value, hence we REJECT NULL HYPOTHESIS at alpha = 0.05 with 17 d.f for two tailed test .The P-Value is .021315.The result is significant at p < .05.
Critical value of t at alpha=0.01 with 17 d.f for Two-Tailed test is 2.89
Since critical value of t is greater than Calculated Value of t at alpha=0.01 with 17 d.f for Two-Tailed Test. Hence we DO NOT REJECT NULL Hypothesis H0. P-value is .021315.The result is NOT significant at p < .01
Now by using above results , we will solve the given result.
1) True (Neither)
2) False
3) True (Has)
4)False
5) False
6) False
7) True (Been)
8) False
9) True (Heard)
10) False
11) False
12) True (Since)
13) False.
Neither has been heard since .
