Question

I need this answered with a lower sum estimate as stated in the problem. The answer in the back of the book says that it should be 5190 sq ft and the cost is approx. 5190*2.10 or $10,899

I need to know how the 5190 was calculated using the lower sums. Thanks

A new parking lot To meet the demand for parking, your town has allocated the area shown here. As the town engineer, you have been asked by the town council to find out if the lot can be built for $10,000. The cost to clear the land will be $0. 10 a square foot, and the lot will cost $2.00 a square foot to pave. Can the job be done for $10,000? Use a lower sum estimate to see. (Answers may vary slightly, depending on the estimate used.)

Explanation / Answer

the Riemann lower sum means you take on each interval [x(k-1), xk]=15 ft the lowest value from y(k-1) and yk. This means

Area =15*(0+36+51+49.5+49.5+54+64.4+42) =5196 sq.ft.

The total cost is just this area multiplied by the ost per sq ft (0.1 USD to clear +2 USD to pave)

Cost =5196*2.1 =10911.6 USD
