Question
You are the athletics director at a major Division I institution that has a strong tradition of success in football and men’s basketball. Your football and men’s basketball coaches are making a habit of recruiting large numbers of athletically gifted prospective student-athletes who are marginal students. The members of the media are beginning to question the athletics department’s commitment to academic success.
The president of the university has instructed you to include language in the coaches’ contracts that addresses these academic concerns.
What stipulations or incentives would you add to the contracts? Why?
Explanation / Answer
In the coaching agreement I would add the below conditions that
Coach should have a graduate degree from reputed institution
Should have sufficient language skills to guide the team members on effective communication with media and public
Need to guide the team members on games and team practices ensuring proper behavior both in the field and outside
Coach should have the responsibility over the language used by the team during the match
I would try to motivate the coach by introducing incentives for the matches for which the team performs well both in field as well as outside and completes the season without any complaints. This would help to motivate the coach to have better control over the team members and the coach would also teach them on how to behave well in the society in a professional way. Language is essential for ensuring the same and hence the coaches would definitely give proper language training for the team members who are marginal students which would help to reduce media complaints.
