Question
Two proposed cold remedies - CSl (cough syrup) and CS2 (chicken soup)-were compared in a hospital study. The objective was to determine which treatment enabled patients to recover more quickly. The duration of sickness was defined as the time (days) between when patients reported to the hospital requesting treatment and when they were discharged from the hospital. The results are tabulated as follows: (a) Determine the mean recovery time for each medication. (b) Which remedy was associated with the fastest recoveries?Explanation / Answer
(a) As we know mean value is average value, from table we have the mean time for patients administered CS1 is,
( 8.10+7.25+5.89+7.12+5.60+1.85+4.00+5.58+9.92+4.25) /10 =59.56/10,
=5.956 days
Now, the mean time for patients administered CS2 is,
(5.79+2.81+3.27+4.87+5.49+6.60+2.63+4.64+6.96+5.83) /10 =48.89/10,
=4.889 days.
(b) As we have now the mean time taken by patients administered CS2(4.889 days) is lower than the patients administered CS1(5.956),
So, we can say CS2 was associated with fastest recovery.
