Question

give your thoughts 3-5 sentences

Ever since it was first allowed, the death penalty has been a hot topic. Although it may be a way to provide closure and vengeance to victims of a vicious crime, I believe the death penalty should be abolished.

I believe that maybe the death penalty may have served its purpose way back when, but there’s no practical reason for it anymore. One may argue that our tax dollars are paying for those who are in prison to stay in prison and it’s cheaper to just get rid of them, but research shows otherwise. Overall, it is ten times more expensive to kill a person serving the death penalty than having them serve a life sentence. Yes, the actual injection of the lethal drug is what is cheap about the death penalty, but that is not what entails when it comes to tax payer’s money sentencing someone to death. You must take in account the cost of capital cases which as the Washington State Bar Association estimated the costs of prosecution and such capital cases is $470,000. Then you can’t forget the costs of the many appeals that come with death trial cases. Also, it costs more to house death penalty prisoners. In states like Kansas and California, they have to pay twice as much to house their death penalty prisoners. There is more money that goes into the death penalty cases then tax payers understand.

Another reason I believe the death penalty should be abolished is that capital punishment has showed no decline in crime. There have been lots of scientific studies done on this issue. In fact, states like New York where the death penalty is abolished has a lower murder rate than states such as Texas. A professor from Carnegie Mellon University led a research program that in the end concluded that the prevalence of law enforcement is most important in preventing crimes. Not them thinking what happens after they may prevent the crime. Because they simply don’t think what’s going to happen after they commit this crime they want to act on.

Although the death penalty may have seemed like justice to some, it is proving to be impractical and thus should be abolished.

Explanation / Answer

Death penalty is not a solution to any problem as there is no evidence that it has lowered the number of crimes in the society. Though, it may satisfy the vengeance of the victims or their closed ones but nobody has a right over a human life even how brutal the crime may be. Instead of spending the valuable tax money on death penalty prisoners and procedures government should focus on measures for the prevention of crimes in the state that will lower the crime rate. The police investigations are not fool proof , so, the evidences that supports the crime may put an innocent life at risk of death penalty. Thus, death penalty is neither beneficial for society nor is helpful in deterring crimes but only takes away right to life of a person ,hence, should be abolished.
