You watched the PBS Documentary, Sex Trade. Remember our discussion last lecture on the three dimensions of globalization (economic, political and cultural), and identify in the documentary at least two (2) global developments (any economic, political, cultural factors) that increased the volume of trafficking of women in Ukraine. How do you think these two global factors played out and made Ukranian women the victims of this crime? Explain briefly IMPORTANT: I am expecting you to go beyond the simple "bad guys find the opportunity to do bad things thanks to globalization" explanation. By focusing on the lecture on the three aspects of globalization, explain which of the economic, political, and cultural reasons might be contributing to human trafficking

Explanation / Answer

Globalisation has brought enough opportunities and challenges in the world. It has facilitated the free movement of capital, labour and services across the globe. Countries with tough political and economic scenario gained out of globalisation while people in countries that were not politically and economically strong became the victim's. Human trafficking is one of the worst thing that has emerged as the top challenges for border agencies.

Economic - One of the most important factors people migrate to different places is their economic conditions. They are willing to take any risk in a country that is new to them. Traffickers use this willingness to overcome poverty and economic crisis and sell people as household workers and sex slaves. As captured in the video, Ukrainian women know that they will be sold as sex slaves by Volga which was finally proved by the frontline team that prepared this documentary.

Political - Human Trafficking is a common thing in war torn countries and developing countries because of their instable political scenario. The policing system and the judicial system are very corrupted in these countries. Ukraine, which is close to Russia is a war torn country and it is corrupted. If we look at the final scenes of the video the trafficker was sentenced to only 5 years probation as against the victim's expectation that he would be sentenced to atleast 8 to 15 years. This shows that they could escape very easily from the legal system.
