You watched the "Extreme Smuggling Drugs" Documentary. Identify at least 2 (two) global factors or developments (economic, political, or cultural) that are significant in the spread of Drug Trafficking BUT WERE NOT mentioned in the documentary. Why do you think these two factors you identify are really important in understanding the spread of drug trafficking?
(HINT: I expect you to go beyond the "bad guys find the opportunity to do bad things in globalization" type of explanations. The documentary is all about "bad guys" but doesn't talk about the "structural reasons" that produce bad guys. Identify various economic, political, cultural reasons (inequalities, structural imbalances between countries, corporate power, etc) that contribute to drug trafficking . Give examples from the videos)
Explanation / Answer
Drugs trafficking along with the human trafficking for sex and terrorists activities all around the world. The growing number of drug mafias along with the drug users pose a great threat to the economy and threat to internal security of the countries. While in the developed countries, stress and life style spread the use of drugs, in the developing and poor countries the political and government administrations help the drug traffickers spread their operations through corruption and bribery. There are several reasons why people yield to become drug sellers and smugglers. They include economic, political and social factors.
Poverty is one reason for people give into traffickers. Once they are in the system, they can’t return for two reasons, one they won’t have any other income and two they will put their family and their own lives in danger. It was shown in the documentary when a victim gave testimony.
Corrupted political system is another reason where the traffickers bribe and get into the scene. These corrupt politicians and officials recruit people and help the traffickers. This was also shown in the documentary that drugs come from South American Countries where the political and policing system are very weak to North America where the policing and political system is very strong.
