Compare and Contrast Essay 1

Students will write a 2-3 page essay comparing two works of art portraying the same subject matter. The essay should compare 2 great works of art by world renowned artist. Your job is to find two works of art about the same topic, or same general topic, and compare and contrast them. Some ideas students might use could be portraits like those of famous people like Napoleon, George Washington, and Henry the VIII. There are many common themes and subject in religious art, like the statues and paintings of King David, of the Crucifixion of Christ, or the Last Supper and there are many artistic renderings of Greek myths. Consider still life paintings or landscapes as well. Or, the paintings could both be about war, boxing, dancers, boats and so on. The point the essay is to help readers understand and appreciate the works of art better. so take some time to search the web for of art works that are interesting for you as a writer. Find works that cover a similar topic, but in very interesting and unique ways

There will be a discussion topic devoted to this essay to help students share ideas and post works. That way we can collaborate a little and get support from classmates.

Students should read chapter 6 thoroughly. The essay must be written in a point by point style as discussed in chapter 6. To help the reader understand your essay better, if possible students should attach a copy of the art works to their final drafts as the last page or pages.

The essay will not require any research, but if you do use source material then documentation is required. All essays should document research properly using MLA style. The appendix contains excellent information and examples of how to use research effectively in your essays and MLA style documentation. Always include two types of documentation: one in the body of the essay when a source is used and another references at the end on a list of works cited.

The essay also requires students to construct a clear thesis statement to bring the essay into focus and give the essay a purpose. Remember that comparing is simply your method. Students need to find a point worth making, a thesis statement. Make sure to spend time learning about creating a strong thesis (main point) to support by comparing and contrasting. All good essays have a sense of focus and purpose.

The following are the major graded components of the essay. There is also a review checklist on page 177 in your book.

These are a review checklist from the page 177

thesis. Does your thesis establish a limited basis for comparison so that you have room and time to cover all the relevant similarities and differences?

organization. does your arrangement of material whether subject by subject or point do justice to your subjects and help readers follow the comparison?

balance and flexibility. have you covered the same features of both subjects? At the same time, have you avoided a rigid back and forth movement that could bore or exhaust a reader?

parallelism. have you used parallel structure to clarify the subjects and points you are discussing?

Note: This response is in UK English, please paste the response to MS Word and you should be able to spot discrepancies easily. You may elaborate the answer based on personal views or your classwork if necessary. Also, the subject I have picked is “portrayal of pain through abstract expressionism.” Therefore, these paintings have no real person as a muse but rather are similar because they both have paint slathered on a canvas in an artistic manner. Furthermore, both artists and the genre of art have commonalities. I will be discussing their lives and how their emotions were evident in their description. I haven’t chosen paintings of common public figures because that won’t particularly stand-out in your class. You can find pictures of these paintings online.

(Answer) Art in the Renaissance and later the industrial revolution were all influenced in Paris, Florence and other European nations. It was only after World War 2 when Abstract Expressionism came from the USA that New York was put on the map in the art sphere. Abstract Expressionism similar to Dadaism is more like “art for art sake.” This means that the artistic value of the piece lies in the emotions it conveys and the artistic interpretations of the viewers. It is the kind of art that one who does not connect with the artist may find distasteful. However, if the view has figured out what the artist intentionally and or inadvertently depicts, it could be a very valuable painting indeed.

Perhaps it is because several viewers have understood what Rothko and Pollock were meaning to say through their paintings, that has made them so exorbitant. This became popular and so important after World War 2 because people were truly desperate for a medium to convey their frustrations and expressions about the events that had just taken place around the world.

A.E. Rothko was a man who belonged to an immigrant family during the time of these wars. Such an individual would best understand the plight of the deprived around the world at that time. His painting “Yellow, pink and lavender on rose” is a typical example of merging of varied colours to represent the situations he faced as a child and then as an adult. The contrasting lives that a diaspora would normally have before and after having settled in a safe place is clearly visible in this simple painting. This painting is represented by separate colour blocks with a white block in the middle and a black line above it. It could perhaps depict the transitional life that war is capable of bringing about in the life of an immigrant or even a refugee.

Having resettled and built a better life for himself, Rothko was able to concentrate on his art after having achieved a peaceful academic life. His painting resembles therapeutic work which is what abstract expressionism is all about; it is about venting. This is what Rothko perfectly emulates in his work and is what makes him a pioneer in the art form.

The artist named Jackson Pollock has lived the life of a typical troubled artist. He came from a deprived background. Nevertheless, his mother supported his artistic ventures and he went on to take it up professionally. However, he was expelled from school for being a rebel. Such an individual would truly have a lot to vent about and thus would make him the perfect advocate for abstract expressionism. This is because; this art form is not as much about the art as it is about the artist themselves. “No. 5” by Jackson Pollock is truly a chaotic painting. It is difficult to decipher as it has a myriad of emotion spurted onto the canvas. The buyer of the painting would possibly weed out a different abstract expression of the painter each time that they would look at it.

Both of these paintings represent a mire of complex emotion that both artists have faced throughout their lives. It is so for most humans that sometimes extreme emotions tend to overwhelm and communicating becomes difficult. For these artists, communication was simply through art. These paintings are not particularly for the aesthetics as they are for the emotions they convey. In the cases of both artists, a troubled life has resulted in beautiful art.
