Explanation / Answer
The first learning theory was that of Plato. He tried to answer his own question that how do people learn a completely new topic to them by stating that the knowledge is present at birth and all information learned by a person is a recollection of the learnings of the soul. This is called theory of recollection also known as platonic epistemology. According to him what you dont know by borth you cant learn it at all. This theory was rejected because of the controversial idea that where did we get the knowledge from and what about learning other new things .
AFter this John Locke developed the Blank Slate theory. According to this theory humans are born with no innate knowledge but with mental powers. These powers enable the child to change its experiences into learnings. This theory was partially accepted as it explains the basic process of learning .
Then Watson developed a behavioristic theory. According to this this suggests that learning can be done via the actions of society as well as conditioning of behaviors. It was the basis of the rest of the theories and clearly explains how a childs behavior is determined by the social environment as well as the home of the child . The basis of the theory is learning by observing and adapting the societal norms and the conditioning of the lerned habits pr behviors by various punishments, observtions, rewards and reinforcements.
Further came the classical conditioning whereby it was stated that association with the stimuli changes the behavior and its occurence. This was proved by a dog experiment by Ivan Pavlov. The dog was presented woth food after a bell and he used to salivate in the initial stages. Later the dog started salivating agter the bell only even if the food wasnt prese ted. It was presumed it happens with humans also. Operant conditioning explains learning by reward and punishment. On the occurence of a behavior if reward is presented then it enhances the behavior and if punishment was given then it leads to avoidance of behavior. Social learning theory includes observing behavior and following by imitation or modelling. The mixture of these theories lead to the experiment which clearly shows that bullying is effected by the home and the social environment. An experiment was conducted in which children were made to observe the bullying behavior of others in a video and this was done with 3 different groups. One group saw the behavior being rewarded, the second group saw the behavior being punished and the third one saw neither reward nor punishment. The children were then locked in a room with bobo dolls and it was observed that the group which saw the reward video displayed the maximum violence and bullying whereas the punishment video group saw the minimum violence and bulling. The other experiments showed that children coming from families in which the parents fight or the father beats the mother out of authority bully others more. Also it was observed that the children coming from religions and cultures where aggression is not considered bad then they tend to bully more than the others.
Conclusively learning is determined by our observations and these observations an be anywhere in the society and the home.
