Question

For this assignment, make sure that you've watched the video on the Pygmalion Effect, or the self-fulfilling prophecy, included in the PowerPoint lesson. I've also linked it here:

Then, answer the following questions:

1) What is the independent variable?

2) What is the dependent variable?

3) Who is the control group?

4) Who is the treatment group, and what is the treatment?

5) Give one example of the self-fulfilling prophecy that you have seen, either in your own life or in the life of others. You can use an example from the news or from previous experience. If you consult with an outside source, make sure to cite your sources! If you have any questions about how to cite appropriately, let me know.

For this assignment, you do not have to write in essay format, but please write in complete sentences. Each of the first four questions can be answered in a sentence or two. Question five will likely require a paragraph.

Don't forget citations!

Explanation / Answer

1. In the study, the knowledge of expecting intellectual bloomers or potentially better performers to teachers acted as the independent variable.

2. The students’ achievement on the IQ test was the dependent variable.

3. In the study, the children in whose case the teachers were not provided with any feedback about expectation of high scores acted as the control group and it allowed the researchers to test their hypothesis whether positive expectation can actually lead to enhanced performance.

4. The group of children and teachers with whom an expectation about better performance was created acted as the treatment of the experimental group. The administration of the knowledge about intellectual bloomers to the teachers acted as the treatment condition in the study.

5. Other than the classic Rosenthal experiment on self fulfilling prophecy, one can see the working of such a social influence in everyday life also. For instances, as I was growing up, I noticed that my playmates who were more attractive or pretty looking by mainstream standards grew to be more socially confident and assertive because they had experienced a high expectation of being the center of attention as children and the positive feedback they received from others facilitated in the development of their social skills.
