Explanation / Answer

Probability in research is used to describe the extent to which a significant relationship exists between thevariables. That is probability estimates indicate whether the research outcomes are likely to occur or not occur under the same condiitons of a controlled study. A psychological research is said to be probabilistic because there can be multiple possible outcomes, for instance in a study of memory and noise, either participants would be able to learn and memorise a list of words in a noisy room or they will not be able to memorise. There can be third possibility where the researchers find no change in memory due to noise. Thus, all these outcomes would tell us something different about our initial hypothesis of a significant relationship between memory and noise, each with a varying degree of certainty or uncertainty of its occurance.
