Question
interview 2 family members and 1 friend and ask them the following questions; 1. How many races do they think exist? 2. Do they believe any one race is superior to another? Then, using the book and the Powerpoint, 3. explain to them the how scientists do not believe that race is a biological concept and the idea of the Social Construction of Race (the idea that race is constructed differently depending on the society and the era in that society) and write down how they feel about what you have taught them.
Explanation / Answer
1. How many races do they think exist?
One of my family members and my friend told me there are two races Black and White but they also told that there are different people living in different countries. One of my other family members told that he had seen different races mentioned in the census form such as, European American, African American, Latino American etc. So he told that he remembered five or six.
2. Do they believe any one race is superior to another?
Two of my family members who are at their middle ages told that whites, especially European Americans are superior to any other race in the world by my friend told that no one is superior because in front of God we are all equal.
3. explain to them the how scientists do not believe that race is a biological concept and the idea of the Social Construction of Race (the idea that race is constructed differently depending on the society and the era in that society) and write down how they feel about what you have taught them.
I told them that people often think that race is a biological aspect and it is directly connected to the white colour. There were times when people thought that White Europeans were more intelligent than other people. People, especially the colonizers needed some excuse to continue their supremacy over other people, so they constructed a colour based supremacy. Technological advancement shouldn't be consideered as race supremacy either because if one is able to survive in a natural setting on their own will be more superior, in that most modern people who live with the help of the technology will struggle to survive.
Intelligence and supremacy shouldn't be based on the colour and genes. Some Psychologists such as John B. Watson has even challenged the world by saying that give me a dozen well formed babies and I'll make them whoever you want them to become. So everyone is equal infront of God and any civilized man will treat everyone equally. Now, think about our forefathers who made other people suffer in the yesteryears. It was out of their ignorance and they were not civilized yet. So, if the society needs to progress, it has to treat everyone equally.
