Central to our approach to leadership is recognizing the motivational focus of leaders. While we can teach different competencies of leadership, it is the deeper motivational processing systems that are crucial, particularly whether leaders are self-focused, competitive and threat driven, in contrast to cooperative, supportive and care-focused. As we will discuss these are rooted in and arise from completely different evolved motivational systems that organize a range of emotional, cognitive, behavioral and self-focused processes in different ways. Social Mentalities - Competition Vs. Collaboration One way we can explore these issues is through Professor Paul Gilbert's social mentality theory. Social mentality theory uses an evolutionary functional analysis of motivational systems. Evolution is basically driven by reproduction and survival. Over many millions of years these drivers have built a range of motivational systems for sexual, competition and engagement, caring for offspring and forming alliances, forming in-groups and out-groups, cooperating vs. Social hierarchical competing. Indeed, each social mentality entails its own built in motivations. A central evolutionary tension we'll focus on here is that of competition/social rank mentality and the cooperation/ alliance building mentality, which stand in contrast to it. While some are often hungry to compete, defeat, win and dominate others, there are those who are focused on collaboration and alliance building towards supportive relationships and effective teamwork.In this module we will discuss the nature of both mentalities, the types of personalities and leaders that align with each mode of leadership, how that influences employees and systems, and what concrete actions can be taken from a compassionate leadership stance to arrive at ideal outcomes for both individuals and organizations.

The leadership is the Quality that comes with the social dominance, strategic thinking, diversity management, etc. In order to make the leadership quality strong we need to analyse the threat to the system. Internal factors and the external factors that affect the system should be analysed deeply. The central approach to the leadership would help to identify the motivation level in the leadership process. There are various ways to explore the issues. The issue such as Social mentalities -competition versus collaboration can be well explored by the social mentality theory. This theory uses the evolutionary functional analysis of the motivational systems. Evolution is the basic process of survival. Competition social rank mentality and the cooperating building mentality are being focussed here. Another issue we explore here is the social dominance orientation and the up-ranking of the others with competitions. This issue points out the social orientation of the people which build the leadership quality and who is up and down in this is focussed here. Another issue is social distress. The social mentality theory focuses on the co-creation of the social roles. The previous way of doing business was either along with business or getting ahead in the business.
