Introduction to Compassionate Leadership This course is about bringing two importantly linked sets of concepts and behavior together, namely leadership and compassion. The leadership and compassion literature have already begun to come together in various meaningful ways (see below) but we may also have to reconsider the heroic, individual model of leadership, appreciating that compassionate leadership is a collective effort mediated by individuals. Employees' personal lives and organizational lives conspire to create inevitable challenges and suffering. Often the concept of compassion is considered an emotional state. We agree with that, but also consider compassion to be a broader dynamic interpersonal opportunity to take action in the face of emerging difficulties. Hence, we offer a strong emphasis on action through recognition of life's challenges and engaged empathic response as the focus of this course Leadership Leadership has always been central to the human experience and has been studied formally and informally for 1000's of years. Simply put, a leaders' job is to define a clear vision statement answering "What, Why, and How" the organization will reach. In defining the approach and criteria the organization hopes to achieve, the leader provides employees with direction, assistance, and purpose that motivate an organization's stakeholders or group of followers to achieve tasks or strategic goals. While the fundamental goal of leadership is the overall execution of the aforementioned strategy, the evaluation of the effect of their vision statement on their followers is important. Such evaluation facilitates better influencing stakeholders in committing their effort to accomplishing proposed organizational goals. Developing a vision to have critical organizational impact must address three critical questions 1. The "What?," or organizational task 2. The "Why?," or organization's purpose 3. The "How?," the organizations operational concept The purpose of this brief and experiential course is to introduce you to the fundamentals of Compassionate Leadership. The focus is to integrate leadership and the concept of compassion. Can a leader be compassionate? Does leadership require understanding or having compassion based skills? Why and how will both leadership abilities and compassion-based skills facilitate the performing of your duties? Participants in this session should investigate a process of how they can define what their personal leadership and compassionate style are. Their understanding of this is a first step in the personal journey to explore their own psychological, physical team-based and organizational leadership capacity. We will define personality in terms of participant leadership connected to research in the behavioral and social sciences, along the way facilitating professional skills linked to compassion (for yourself and others) needed to be an effective leader in all of its complexityExplanation / Answer
Leadership in a professional environment is about providing the right guidance and direction to not only the employees but also the entire organization. A compassionate leader is not in an emotional state of mind but weighs and balances the rational, practical and emotional aspects while taking any critical business decisions. Every individual has a personal leadership as well as compassion style and the clear amalgamation of the two is possible only when one discovers the styles unique to our personality.
Why : The first thing to be understood here, is the need for compassion in a leader. Employees experience multitude of emotions at workplace and a leader who is able to make the rational decisions, with the focus on the emotions of others as well, is an effective one. A leader also has the role to play to influence multiple people, hence the need to be compassionate.
How: Compassion is reciprocative, so when you are compassionate as a leader so is your team when you need them. There are numerous CEO’s who have been compassionate with their teams and the results have been manifold.
